چکیده

Using density functional calculations we explore the properties of as-yet-unsynthesized 3d-5d ordered double perovskites (A2BB ′O6) with highly polarizable Bi3+ ions on the A site. We find that the Bi2NiReO6 and Bi2MnReO6 compounds are insulating and exhibit a robust net magnetization that persists above room temperature. When the in-plane lattice vectors of the pseudocubic unit cell are constrained to be orthogonal (for example, by coherent heteroepitaxy), the ground states are ferroelectric with large polarization and a very large uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy with easy axis along the ferroelectric polarization direction. Our results suggest a route to multiferroism and electrically controlled magnetization orientation at room temperature.

Lattice-distortion Induced Magnetic Transition from Low-temperature Antiferromagnetism to High-temperature Ferrimagnetism in Double Perovskites A2FeOsO6 (A = Ca, Sr)

High-temperature insulating ferrimagnetism is investigated in order to further reveal its physical mechanisms, as well as identify potentially important scientific and practical applications relative to spintronics. For example, double perovskites such as Sr2FeOsO6 and Ca2FeOsO6 are shown to have puzzling magnetic properties. The former is a low-temperature antiferromagnet while the latter is a...

Giant magnetocrystalline anisotropy of 5d transition metal-based phthalocyanine sheet.

Large magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) is a critical requirement for nanomagnets for applications in magnetic memory and storage devices. Due to small spin-orbit interaction the MAE of ferromagnetic films or single molecule magnets based on 3d metals is small and in typical magnetic nanostructures it is of the order of 2-3 meV. We show that MAE as high as 140 meV can be achieved by ap...

Magnetism and magnetocrystalline anisotropy of 3dtransition metal monolayers on Pt(001): a density-functional study.

We systematically investigate the effects of having Pt as a substrate and/or capping layer on the magnetism and magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) of 3d transition metal (TMs; Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) monolayers (MLs) by using a first-principles calculationl method. We found that Fe and Co MLs are ferromagnetic (FM) on a Pt(001) surface, but Mn and Cr MLs are antiferromagnetic (AFM). The magnetic m...

Spin-orbit coupling control of anisotropy, ground state and frustration in 5d2 Sr2MgOsO6

The influence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the physical properties of the 5d(2) system Sr2MgOsO6 is probed via a combination of magnetometry, specific heat measurements, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and density functional theory calculations. Although a significant degree of frustration is expected, we find that Sr2MgOsO6 orders in a type I antiferromagnetic structure at the rem...

Permanent magnetism of intermetallic compounds between light and heavy transition-metal elements.

First-principle calculations are used to investigate the intrinsic magnetic properties of intermetallic alloys of the type XMn, where X is a 4d or 5d element and M is Fe or Co. Emphasis is on the hexagonal C14 Laves-phase 1:2 and 1:5 alloys, the latter crystallizing in the CaCu5 structure. These series are of interest in permanent magnetism from fundamental and practical viewpoints, respectivel...
